This books is about a journey of cultural discovery from Greece, the fountainhead of Western culture, to Xinjiang, the Uighur province of Western China. It traverses Turkey, Iran, and the Central Asian countries through which the Silk Road runs. It deals with the rise of Islamic consciousness within countries east of the Hellespont in the context of both history and modern times. The contrast of attitudes, religion, art and architecture is shown in the descriptions of what the author sees along the way.
