Tony Grey AM graduated with a BA in History (Hons) and practised Law in Toronto before immigrating to Australia in 1972 where he founded and built Pancontinental Mining Ltd, a publicly listed diversified resource company. He is a former director of Opera Australia and the Conservatorium of Music, and a former trustee of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. He is a past Chairman of the Brain Foundation, a charity to raise funds for neurological research, and is currently on the Board.

His involvement in international mining ventures, which have taken him to many faraway locations, informed the books he has written. Jabiluka (1994) was followed by East Wind (2008), a cultural journey from Greece to the Great Wall of China, and Seven Gateways (2013), travels to seven places of spiritual significance.
